Coating and Corrosion Preparation (3 PDHs)

This course is part of a series of courses on Painting and Coating of Structures. This is the first course in the series, Coating and Corrosion Preparation. This course starts off discussing corrosion and what the causes are for rust and corrosion. Next, it goes into surface preparation and how to remove lead-based paint.

There are three modules in this course. They are: Corrosion Basics, Surface Preparation, and Removing Lead Based Paints.

The two other courses in the series are: Coating Materials and Application and Coating Maintenance and Specifications. Although these are standalone courses, we suggest you take all three courses in the series for a better understanding of painting and coating on structures.

This course offers professional development hours (PDHs). You will see the PDHs on your course completion certificate, which also serves as documentation of your attendance. PDH requirements vary, therefore, it is up to you to determine whether or not this particular course qualifies under your State or board requirements.

Training level: Intermediate

Target audience: The target audience for this course is supervisors or engineers dealing with corrosion and coatings, but the information is also a good background for the technicians inspecting and maintaining coating system for a steel structure.

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the economic consequences of steel corrosion;
  • Explain the four components of the corrosion cell;
  • Relate environmental factors, such as the presence of chlorides, to the corrosion of structural steel;
  • Explain the basic mechanism by which corrosion is arrested or mitigated;
  • Compare and contrast the elements and uses of barrier, inhibitive, and sacrificial coatings for steel;
  • Describe the use of uncoated weathering steel, galvanizing, and metalizing as corrosion prevention systems;
  • Describe the importance and objectives of surface preparation;
  • Compare and contrast various methods of surface preparation;
  • Identify industry standards for surface cleanliness and surface profile;
  • Identify abrasive types and their characteristics;
  • Describe pre-surface preparation (pre-cleaning) procedures;
  • Identify indirect requirements of the AMPP surface cleanliness standards;
  • Evaluate surface cleanliness using visual guides;
  • Measure surface profile;
  • Identify State and Federal resources that apply to major areas of environmental and worker health and safety regulations for lead paint removal;
  • Describe surface preparation methods that can potentially impact air, soil, and water quality; and
  • List the four steps needed when there is a potential for the presence of hazardous paint on bridge structures.
